Las Vegas Casinos Are Open, But Visitors Staying Away

Las Vegas casinos reopened in early June after they were forced to temporarily shutter in March because of the coronavirus. But the gaming floors have remained relatively deserted since the slots were turned back on.
The Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority (LVCVA) says visitor volume totaled a little more than one million people in June. That’s down 70.5 percent from June 2019.
Of the 1,065,100 people who did venture to the region, not a one did so for convention business purposes. With daily new COVID-19 cases continuing to rise throughout the month — and in July — Gov. Steve Sisolak (D) continues to limit indoor gatherings, keeping convention and exhibitions off-limits.
June is traditionally a busy month for Las Vegas, as schools let out and leisure travelers and families get their summer vacations underway. However, after 78 days of being closed, Sin City casinos had little trouble in abiding their state-ordered 50 percent occupancy limits.
Through the first half of 2020, Las Vegas visitor volume stands at 9.7 million — a 54 percent decline. Approximately 11.4 million fewer people have arrived in town in the last six months, compared with the same period in 2019.
Every large convention for the remainder of 2020 has been postponed or canceled, and adding to the bad near-term outlook, the Las Vegas Raiders announced this past week that the team’s inaugural season will be played without fans in Allegiant Stadium.
Luring Travelers
June’s visitor volume is down 70.5 percent. But it’s nonetheless an improvement on May when volume totaled just 151,300 — a 96 percent year-over-year plunge.
It’s not that the casino resorts aren’t trying. Numerous properties along the Strip and elsewhere are offering varying incentives to bring back tourists. From the temporary release of resort fees (Sahara, M Resort), to deeply discounted rooms at every major casino property, the gaming industry is doing what it can.
MGM Resorts, which operates the most casino properties in Las Vegas, launched an advertising blitz this past week that seeks to attract remote workers to its resorts. “Viva Las Office” is tailored to those not accustomed to working from home who need a change of scenery. The program provides food and beverage credits per night, early and late checkouts, and credits to fly private on JSX.
Speaking of JSX, one of its main partners is Wynn Resorts. Last week, the casino operator announced the most unheard-of hotel deal for a luxury Las Vegas resort: weekend buy-on/get-one (BOGO) deals.
Prices for a Wynn room started at just $155 (plus $45/night resort fee) for this weekend. Those who booked a room received a second night free (exclusive of taxes and resort fee).
“When you’re sort of overcome with melancholy seeing a BOGO offer. From Wynn. On a weekend,” Vital Vegas commented on the promo.
Critical Marketing
The LVCVA has been criticized in years past for what some believe is an exorbitant operating budget. Critics say Las Vegas sells itself, a notion the authority has continually rejected.
In the COVID-era, the authority certainly has a chance to prove its naysayers wrong, as the task ahead is certainly tall.
In June, the LVCVA extended its decades-long advertising contract with R&R Partners for a year. The contract was up for bidding, but the agency extended its R&R deal in the wake of the pandemic.
R&R was given a $110 million war chest to develop and produce marketing spots around the country. The money is also used to secure the media buys.

Vegas just refuses to listen to their visitors about the resort fees and this has been a complaint before Covid 19. They could go onto any Las Vegas forum, any Vegas group on face book and see this one of the biggest complaints and the stupid parking fees. People do get tired of being Nicole and dime to death and that's whats been happening in Vegas. I no longer stay on the strip when I go. I go to the Golden Nugget where I have no resort fees, and I'm not a Big roller but you can believe they get that resort fee more than ten times over per day, with my play. I go to Vegas for the gambling, food and other entertainment Not for their internet, newspaper, gym, etc. What they claim the resort fees cover. And about the closure of bars, I can see the lounges being close but the bars don't make sense. They're losing big money there. They should be open for purchase but not for groups to hang out.
CLOSE BACK DOWN!!!!!! COMPLETELY! EVERYDAY I SEE RESTAURANTS FULL,NO ONE OBIDING BY WEARING MASKS,ETC. WE WILL NEVER GET RID OF COVID-19 UNTIL? EVERYONE TAKES THIS VIRUS SERIOUSLY!!!!!! THANK YOU GOVERNOR FOR DOING A GREAT JOB!!!!!! ON THE OTHER HAND THE SO CALLED MAYOR WE HAVE,? GOODMAN SHOULD BE ASHAMED OF HERSELF!!!!!!! SHE'S ONLY LOOKING OUT FOR BIG BUSINESS!!!!!!!? SHE DOESN'T GIVE A DARN WHO DIES!!!!! I WILL BE SO GLAD BEING A RESIDENT HERE, THAT SHE'S OUT OF OFFICE!!!!! SHE'S A DISGRACE!!!!!!!!!!!! GREAT JOB GOVERNOR!!!!❤️❤️❤️❤️
Money and GREED.
Slots way to tight i know i will lose, but at least let me play a while. Alcohol is non existent because so short on staff. Indian casinos way better. Self parking should always be free to people that use your facility. Sincerely cindy mcintosh
Every single visitor despises resort fees to begin with. Bars closed, some shops and restaurants closed and masks at the pool. Yet you still charge resort fees? The BS meter is off the charts right now. I've got no problem playing with thousands on the casino floor but when I go to check out at the end of my trip you want twist the knife just a little more. Does anyone on the planet even understand this? Get a clue Vegas.
Just returned from our annual giris' trip to Las Vegas...of course with a very different experience than ever before. Overall, our Vegas experience was awful. Closed bars and restaurants, no shows, no room service,, deserted streets and casinos, 30-minute waits for Ubers, abundance of homeless street people, and hotel security guards constant harassment over how your face mask fits while you're actively gambling...this was our experience. I have always loved everything about Las Vegas, but I will not be back until the old Vegas is back....but really not sure if this will ever happen.
I would love to be in Vegas, we were due to come in September to see Rod Stewart and renew our vows. This is now cancelled and we are now looking to rebook next year. I think it would be helpful going forward if individual hotels posted on their own websites stating what is available. At the moment it is so unclear especially for people like me based in the UK. I know this is an ever changing situation but some clarity would help. Cannot wait to be in Vegas again
Totally agree with you mike, and true, makes no sense in going when you can’t really enjoy yourself! It’s a waste of time and money going out there when there’s restrictions. Let’s stop the spread and stay home, hopefully in time things will get back to normal and we could all return and enjoy Las Vegas.
I have been going to Las Vegas for the last 11years staying at MGM, Caesar’s,and Bellagio over that period of time my stay was for 14 nights each visit but the resort fee plus tax was extortionate I’m from Scotland and the cost for the holiday alone was expensive and the to add 14 nights resort fee was ludicrous but I did enjoy my time at all three of the hotels. Please consider reducing resort fees.
Las Vegas had built up as a mass of people that slowly built over time. How do you build it back up slowly again without resetting the capital. Conventions were a huge part of what brought people. What does a convention look like now? What about all the overseas traffic? Vegas needs to start figuring out its reset and restart. Someone has to take the hit, because you will never replace all the people needed to generate the kind of cash they need to go back to normal. Normal will not mean this anymore.
cheap deals will only bring cheap none spending people, staying in Wynn & Encore, eat at Denny's, taco el gordo, mcd down the street. no gambling. rather spend in pot stores.
You casino owners should start offering more to your locals. I am a Max better on slots and enjoy it. I have not been back to the casino I used to frequent since they have reopened. If the casino owners would take care of the locals right according to their class from penny betters to max betters I would go back. No respect for locals. What do you owners expect? Answer NO SUPPORT FROM LOCALS becaus you don't care about your locals.
I think one of the biggest detriments to tourists at this time it the exorbitant "resort fees" that many properties charge on top of the room price.
Casinos would get more people to visit if they waived resort fees during the pandemic/recovery. Asking customers to pay up to $45/night but not provide daily room cleaning (due to thr pandemic)? Waive thise fees and more people will show up, and casinos will get way more than $45 back from each gambler per day.
Stop booking at deadbeat, homeless hotels. There's no resort fee bullshit at the normal hotels. And free parking!
