Las Vegas Casinos Are Open, But Visitors Staying Away

Las Vegas casinos reopened in early June after they were forced to temporarily shutter in March because of the coronavirus. But the gaming floors have remained relatively deserted since the slots were turned back on.
The Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority (LVCVA) says visitor volume totaled a little more than one million people in June. That’s down 70.5 percent from June 2019.
Of the 1,065,100 people who did venture to the region, not a one did so for convention business purposes. With daily new COVID-19 cases continuing to rise throughout the month — and in July — Gov. Steve Sisolak (D) continues to limit indoor gatherings, keeping convention and exhibitions off-limits.
June is traditionally a busy month for Las Vegas, as schools let out and leisure travelers and families get their summer vacations underway. However, after 78 days of being closed, Sin City casinos had little trouble in abiding their state-ordered 50 percent occupancy limits.
Through the first half of 2020, Las Vegas visitor volume stands at 9.7 million — a 54 percent decline. Approximately 11.4 million fewer people have arrived in town in the last six months, compared with the same period in 2019.
Every large convention for the remainder of 2020 has been postponed or canceled, and adding to the bad near-term outlook, the Las Vegas Raiders announced this past week that the team’s inaugural season will be played without fans in Allegiant Stadium.
Luring Travelers
June’s visitor volume is down 70.5 percent. But it’s nonetheless an improvement on May when volume totaled just 151,300 — a 96 percent year-over-year plunge.
It’s not that the casino resorts aren’t trying. Numerous properties along the Strip and elsewhere are offering varying incentives to bring back tourists. From the temporary release of resort fees (Sahara, M Resort), to deeply discounted rooms at every major casino property, the gaming industry is doing what it can.
MGM Resorts, which operates the most casino properties in Las Vegas, launched an advertising blitz this past week that seeks to attract remote workers to its resorts. “Viva Las Office” is tailored to those not accustomed to working from home who need a change of scenery. The program provides food and beverage credits per night, early and late checkouts, and credits to fly private on JSX.
Speaking of JSX, one of its main partners is Wynn Resorts. Last week, the casino operator announced the most unheard-of hotel deal for a luxury Las Vegas resort: weekend buy-on/get-one (BOGO) deals.
Prices for a Wynn room started at just $155 (plus $45/night resort fee) for this weekend. Those who booked a room received a second night free (exclusive of taxes and resort fee).
“When you’re sort of overcome with melancholy seeing a BOGO offer. From Wynn. On a weekend,” Vital Vegas commented on the promo.
Critical Marketing
The LVCVA has been criticized in years past for what some believe is an exorbitant operating budget. Critics say Las Vegas sells itself, a notion the authority has continually rejected.
In the COVID-era, the authority certainly has a chance to prove its naysayers wrong, as the task ahead is certainly tall.
In June, the LVCVA extended its decades-long advertising contract with R&R Partners for a year. The contract was up for bidding, but the agency extended its R&R deal in the wake of the pandemic.
R&R was given a $110 million war chest to develop and produce marketing spots around the country. The money is also used to secure the media buys.

I LOVE Las Vegas as much as the next person, but I will wait until this storm settles down a bit. It's not worth the risk of my health..BUT I do hope this will be a season of lessons learned for casino operators in this town, specifically toward fees. It seems the balance of value-versus-price has shifted away from the consumer. Yes, Vegas has some of the best dining, entertainment, and night life I have ever experienced...BUT I am paying an additional cost for these..And I'm okay with that..I'm thankful that I have the choice between Nathan's hot dogs or or the amazing Bavette's Steakhouse..I can choose to either buy a beer at the giftshop or be awed at the NoMad bar....But keep in mind, these aren't added into the "value" of the nightly room rates and resort fees..And i don't expect them to, just like I don't expect my HOA to cover car washes.. But, let me feel as though I'm getting value for what I'm paying each night. Put a coffee maker in my room, slip a newspaper under my door. Have an abundant, AVAILABLE staff at check-in awaiting my arrival. Have a drink staff so large, that I'm actually turning away drink requests because I can't consume them fast enough (as opposed to the opposite)...And please don't make me pay for parking at the very place I'm about to dump ten-fold into the slot machines.. I don't go to Vegas specifically to look at the lights, nor do I specifically go to ride the trams, or hear the sound of the slot machines, or to walk from casino to casino with a drink in my hand, OR fill my tummy at the buffets. But Vegas is like a complex recipe; some ingredients are immediately noticeable, while others remain in the background. But, if one ingredient is missing, you quickly notice that something is off.. Even if you can't put your finger on it, you know it's not quite the same....There are many elements that make up the "Vegas experience"...I'm just not quite ready to settle for anything less. As someone else on here suggested, if i'm going to give my money away, I at least want to be entertained. I don't smoke anymore. But when I did, there was something magical about sitting at a slot machine with a smoke in one hand, a drink in the other..The slot machine singing, watching people roaming around, glasses clinging, and hearing the big crowd cheering from the craps table close by...Small and meaningless, but they add up to MY Vegas..
The comments about not wearing masks disgust me.... I work on the strip and we are over capacity every single night with these idiots that treat us like garbage. Have some fucking respect for Vegas workers when you come here to "vacation." Since you're all not good at tipping, maybe you can at least wear your fucking mask to make up for it.
I'm sure that many people are itching to gamble & with covid damaging the gamblers travels. It will be a very, very long time B4 Vegas is back to normal. It would be nice if the casinos opened up online gambling. It might not work out & it won't make up all that Vegas has lost. But! It will give those who love gambling a chance to play for real money online. It wouldn't hurt to try. Thousands of people take chance when they go to Vegas. So! Why doesn't Vegas take a chance with online gambling for real money. You won't know until the word is out & spreads. Its just a thought
It's not that people don't want to go back. It's part that we can't get into the country. Most of the people live outside of the United States and can't go to the States because our governments won't allow us entry. Another is that the covid numbers in the United States is out of control and we won't go back until the States numbers are eliminated.
We were there mid July, airport was empty! Most resteraunts closed at 10pm bars closed could only get drinks while gambling. We have gone to Las Vegas yearly for over 25yrs and it was the deadest I've ever seen it! The MGM end if the strip was very dirty and littered with trash, was actually a little scary walking down on that end bc it was so empty. You could have shot a gun down in that end and wouldn't have hit anyone. I love Vegas but it's definitely not the same, unfortunately I probably won't be going back unless by some miracle things return to normal! I missed the frozen drink stands, getting a late night dinner and the overall vibe of Vegas!
You people bitching about masks in Vegas is fuccin stupid.. If you have to wear a mask in your state what the hell makes you think we don't?.. Because it's Vegas?.. Lmfao str8 goof ball dummies... Treat the masks like sex... I'm not having sex without a condom because it's dangerous and so is not wearing a mask! Get your shit together!
4 Queens is the best and safest place.. No resort fees!!This article is bullshit.. Damn ass Arizona Charlie's on Decatur is charging resort fees and they have no pool!!! They are jacking up the prices!! Due to the virus.. Don't believe the hype!!!
I go to Vegas 6x a year. Two of my adult children live there and I stay on the Strip. Been twice since covid quarantine lifted. The squeeze isn't worth the juice. No customer service or Vegas experience, just all covid all the time. Everyone in Vegas is focused on telling me what I can't do and worried about keeping the government happy. No thanks. I will stay home and keep my money in my pocket.♂️
This is why...
You want the customer back know you need our help and our business and money so what you have to offer your customers to return to your casino's come on think hard and long don't think cheap and stupid because you forgot words get out and around and next thing you know your lights out so owners it's time for a slot fever jackpot
Just sucks to hang out masked when your spending money on vacation. But you have to do it. Some mind some don’t. I’d rather wait no matter how long to go back to what was. At least I can breathe freely in my own home.
Was there recently, masks at pool? Even if you are by yourself in your own chair? AND, that is IF you can get in! I waited day 1(after registering on line) 5 1/2 hours and day 2, 4 hours (Sunday.) This was at a 5 star hotel in the middle of the strip. Also, NO bars are open (meaning forget video poker at the bar, my favorite thing to do!)....if you enjoy a cocktail while playing take a flask! I had to walk in and sit down at a restaurant, twice, to buy a drink, at the tune of $17.00 each!(Bacardi and coke or a Titos and Tonic,)..in my opinion, they are not ready for visitors!
Americans are such idiots. They started this trend of; wait statistics and data must be false because I was there at a couple hotels for a couple hours for one weekend, and what i saw MUST be representative of the entire dataset of all hours all days all hotels. Therefore, FAKE news! LOL OMG IDIOTs
Yes I am just not comfortable going to Las Vegas having to wear a mask. And believe me I'm going to go back but not till mask thing is over.
The idea that casinos are doing everything possible to bring tourists back is a joke! They can take their BS "Resort Fees" and shove them and then adapt universal Covid rules for all the casinos to implement, not just put up signs, that include mandatory masks, no smoking, install plexiglass and force social distancing. Oh as a reminder, halt the nickeling and diming of Tourists.
