Nevada Unemployment Benefits Delayed, Casino Workers Told They Will Eventually Be Paid

The Nevada unemployment benefits system is overloaded by the COVID-19 pandemic layoffs that have brought the state economy to a standstill. And patience is wearing thin for many of the 170,596 claimants who have filed over the past three weeks.
Processing the unemployment claims is resulting in lengthy time periods before qualified applicants are receiving payments. The Nevada Department of Employment, Training and Rehabilitation (DETR) says it is unable to advise those seeking unemployment pay as to when money might be received.
The unemployment website and phone system is a joke,” tweeted Lisa Roe. “The unemployed of Nevada need help now. There is no more time to waste.”
Numerous social media users are also voicing their frustrations in trying to file. Nevada Gov. Steve Sisolak (D) ordered the closure of all 219 casinos in the state on March 17. The directive is impacting some 206,000 gaming industry workers.
For the first time in my life I’m collecting unemployment. I am furloughed from my casino and should have my job back. In the meantime, it would be nice to be able to log on to the Nevada unemployment website, but of course Sisolak can’t even get that working,” Vegas4life tweeted.
After Sisolak said Monday that he “had a productive two-hour phone call” with Vice President Mike Pence, more critics fired back.
I’ve had a non-productive 3+ hours and counting phone call with unemployment insurance,” said one Las Vegas resident. Another chimed in, “How about fixing the unemployment problem? Casino workers have been trying to get our unemployment for two weeks and it’s busy all day.”
Nevada has 1,953 coronavirus positive cases, and 46 residents have died from the disease.
Time Running Out
Many casinos offered their employees one or two weeks of pay following Sisolak’s order to suspend operations. Those two weeks have come and gone, forcing tens of thousands of workers to sit at home with no incoming money.
While workers at Las Vegas Sands and Wynn Resorts are being paid through at least May 15, billionaire Sands owner Sheldon Adelson explaining it is his company’s obligation to “maximize the number of employees and their families that we can help,” casino workers at other companies are not so fortunate.
The $2 trillion CARES Act stimulus package signed by President Donald Trump last month increases state unemployment benefits by $600 a week through July 31, 2020. But DETR says it hasn’t received those funds yet, the website listing the component’s status as “awaiting federal guidance.”
Sisolak’s executive order suspended all evictions and foreclosures in the state for as long as Nevada remains in a “state of emergency.” MGM Resorts, the largest employer in Nevada, says 60,000 of its employees have been furloughed.
Backpay Guaranteed
Speaking with the Las Vegas Review-Journal, DETR spokesperson Rosa Mendez says qualified unemployment applicants will receive pay from when they first became eligible.
“Claims will be paid without waiting seven days for administrative review to ensure the most prompt payment of claims possible,” Mendez explained.
Nevada casinos will remain closed through the end of the month, per Sisolak’s order. One thing is for certain, and that is the coronavirus economic impact on Nevada, a state that relies on tourism more than any other, will be felt for many months – and possibly years – to come.

won't accept my devbit card except to say zero balance - have never received 1 penny. Rejects my password, whats the problem.
You know what, an extra $600 sounds great... but not if you NEVER get anything! I received a debit card and there has been a $0.00 balance for weeks now. Take half the $600, hire someone to send me the remaining $300 please. I need to pay some bills!
3 weeks now I have tried to call, the Governor is worthless, I don't want back pay I need it now but their answer is back pay. common, everyone wake up and elect someone who can do the job instead of feeling like their 15 minutes of fame is shutting down golf courses. Maybe open the unemployment office longer hours or even Saturday's.
This is what happens when you put government in charge of things. Remember this well when voting. Stop believing government can solve your problems.
I reactivated my claim when I got laid off. Got one check, and then somehow I received a letter saying my employer had no record of my employment and now I haven't been paid for three weeks. I call every day (200+ dials) for over 2 hours, only to be told the line is too long and call back the next business day. I had to reactivate my claim again today, which is worrisome as I do not know if back benefits will be paid now. I cannot talk to anyone. I have sent an email every day with additional information, and I don't know if those are going into a black hole or someone will actually look at this. As an employee of a non-profit, I don't make a lot of money and rely on unemployment. I will be joining the long lines of individuals for the food bank, as much as I hate to take food from children, I too need to eat. I will not be able to cover insurance soon, and then I don't know what will happen. This is a nightmare for someone who usually works 50+ hours a week and now I have nothing. Let's hope this changes soon.
i got the $ 600 on my unemployment benefits this week claim !!!! have faith , be patience .. if you are already getting states benefits weekly and have your debit card .. you are the 1st to get this $ 600 .. god bless everybody
I'm like many have trouble getting anyone to help me, i can't calling and can't get through the phone lines or have response from my intial claim back 4 weeks ago. I keep hearing same song that staff and hours have been extended but nothing has changed. Work hours should be around the clock until they are caught up 7 days a week it's almost like the State are working like normal circumstances it makes no sense. The Governor & his staff doesn't seem to have sense of urgency here what will people do when another month goes by and still no money from unemployment? This is unacceptable and by now a better sysytem should have been in place.
Here we are three weeks in and still haven't seen the increase in unemployment. How hard can it be? As of now the website is down again. The money was approved three weeks ago giving hope, now everyone is so far behind in their bills that, even with backpay, it will only bring everyone current and still struggling. In today's technology, it is unacceptable that this could not have been implemented sooner.
Been trying since 3/14 locked out of phone system and online after 4 weeks of calling finally got to talk to someone push me off on other number over 20000 calls 500 emails and finally was told had to email my id and ss card and someone would get back to me in 7 to 10 days, than will start process that will take another 7 to 10 day... Puts me at 2 months with no help.. Have emailed governor senators Congress to no reply or help. TIME TO MAKE A CHANGE IN NEVADA. What Nevada and unemployment is doing has to be against our civil rights. Some are being singled out and discriminated 2 months with no funds to even eat let alone pay any bills. Have had to steal for past 4 night to feed family. NEVADA IS FAILING ITS GREAT PEOPLE... Time to make a change next election.. TAKE NEVADA BACK
I'll guarantee you if we had a Republican Governor the website would be updated daily with information about exactly what is going on with the funds needed by suffering Nevada citizens, the ones who pump Billions of dollars into our local economy. The latest reason for the hold up is testing programing since the 4th of April. We can put a remote control go-cart on Mars but we can't get the antiauated Tandy TRS-80 to distribute the needed funds. Seems like this Governor is more concerned with closing golf courses and monitoring who is getting haircuts. I watched the many hours of his briefings, notta... The first order of business should be a detailed explanation of what he is doing to make the Federal approved benefits happen today. Staying safe is important but we have heard the words social distancing, wear a mask and wash your hands 2.2 Trillion times. How about we grab a couple Google geniuses and have the programing issue sorted out. Unemployment initial and extentions approved and the $600 extra on the way today. Then we can talk about how many test were given and hording toilet paper. LISTEN TO THE PEOPLE, RESPOND TO THEIR IMEADIATE NEEDS. MIGHT BE EAISER IF THE GOVERNOR PRETENDED HE DIDN'T HAVE A GUARANTEED PAYCHECK NO MATTER WHAT EMERGENCY WE FACE.
I got a 'deny' status on my unemployment because I had started my last job in January at Cosmopolitan and laid off march 8th, plus I quit my second to last job to find something better... so now I have no unemployment by no fault of my own since all the damn casinos were forced to shutdown.... I even told the lady on the phone that was doing my adjudication that it's not my choice to be laid off I need some kind of income, why am I being punished for quitting one job to find something better and when I get it, it's taken away from me by no fault of my own.
I had a lot of trouble just getting onto the unemployment website, when I finally was able to file my claim I received a sign on my homepage stating there was an issue causing delays in receiving my benefit payment. What issue?
For anyone who cant get through to unemployment. To get through, you have to dial as if your trying to win tickets from a radio station. Fast and constantly for as long as it takes. 15-30minutes
I would like to see how quickly anyone can distribute that kind of money. Relax people you'll get your money. Probably next week. I need the money too. For every week I dont get it. I'll get it all when it does come in. Patience people.
It's is really frustrating calling those number for almost 2 weeks now. It's only in Nevada!!!!!!!!!!
