Nevada Unemployment Benefits Delayed, Casino Workers Told They Will Eventually Be Paid

The Nevada unemployment benefits system is overloaded by the COVID-19 pandemic layoffs that have brought the state economy to a standstill. And patience is wearing thin for many of the 170,596 claimants who have filed over the past three weeks.
Processing the unemployment claims is resulting in lengthy time periods before qualified applicants are receiving payments. The Nevada Department of Employment, Training and Rehabilitation (DETR) says it is unable to advise those seeking unemployment pay as to when money might be received.
The unemployment website and phone system is a joke,” tweeted Lisa Roe. “The unemployed of Nevada need help now. There is no more time to waste.”
Numerous social media users are also voicing their frustrations in trying to file. Nevada Gov. Steve Sisolak (D) ordered the closure of all 219 casinos in the state on March 17. The directive is impacting some 206,000 gaming industry workers.
For the first time in my life I’m collecting unemployment. I am furloughed from my casino and should have my job back. In the meantime, it would be nice to be able to log on to the Nevada unemployment website, but of course Sisolak can’t even get that working,” Vegas4life tweeted.
After Sisolak said Monday that he “had a productive two-hour phone call” with Vice President Mike Pence, more critics fired back.
I’ve had a non-productive 3+ hours and counting phone call with unemployment insurance,” said one Las Vegas resident. Another chimed in, “How about fixing the unemployment problem? Casino workers have been trying to get our unemployment for two weeks and it’s busy all day.”
Nevada has 1,953 coronavirus positive cases, and 46 residents have died from the disease.
Time Running Out
Many casinos offered their employees one or two weeks of pay following Sisolak’s order to suspend operations. Those two weeks have come and gone, forcing tens of thousands of workers to sit at home with no incoming money.
While workers at Las Vegas Sands and Wynn Resorts are being paid through at least May 15, billionaire Sands owner Sheldon Adelson explaining it is his company’s obligation to “maximize the number of employees and their families that we can help,” casino workers at other companies are not so fortunate.
The $2 trillion CARES Act stimulus package signed by President Donald Trump last month increases state unemployment benefits by $600 a week through July 31, 2020. But DETR says it hasn’t received those funds yet, the website listing the component’s status as “awaiting federal guidance.”
Sisolak’s executive order suspended all evictions and foreclosures in the state for as long as Nevada remains in a “state of emergency.” MGM Resorts, the largest employer in Nevada, says 60,000 of its employees have been furloughed.
Backpay Guaranteed
Speaking with the Las Vegas Review-Journal, DETR spokesperson Rosa Mendez says qualified unemployment applicants will receive pay from when they first became eligible.
“Claims will be paid without waiting seven days for administrative review to ensure the most prompt payment of claims possible,” Mendez explained.
Nevada casinos will remain closed through the end of the month, per Sisolak’s order. One thing is for certain, and that is the coronavirus economic impact on Nevada, a state that relies on tourism more than any other, will be felt for many months – and possibly years – to come.

My last day of employment at MGM was 3/27. I have yet to see a penny from Nevada Unemployment. I can't get through on the phone lines and the website has said "pending resolution" the entire time. THIS IS CRAZY!!!!
I filed my first clam on Sunday the 12th of April, then on Weds got my normal unemployment amount added to my card. I spoke with two co-workers who have received the extra 600.00 already added to there card. I have not received the extra 600.00 as of yet. I just filed another claim this Sunday, so we will see what happens on Weds. I just don't know why some people have received it, and I have not.
Ok I see how all you Idiots want to politicise this stupid Virus well stop that chit!! I put my claim in on March 22 and it's been pending since I recieved my debit card nada nil nothing!!! So my question is if I am supposed to get unemployment plus the 600 a week will all this be retroactive from the beginning? I was Furloughed on March 22 and expecting to go back to work next month!! Also don't blame the Gov. blame the Idiot in the White House!!
The new phone system he hired to help out from all the calls is the biggest joke I've seen they can't answer any questions. Only help you reset your Pin. Why is he trying to make such a big deal out of this. Why didn't he hire people that knows the unemployment system and can help.If you make a mistake on your claim you can't go back any kind of way to correct it so it makes it easier for them at the unemployment office. Can you Governor come up with some more worthless programs.
can someone please let me know what Available - Restrictions Due to Shift, means thats on every one of my claims i cant get through i hope someone with the same problem got an answer from unemployment and maybe can shine a light on this thank you help
Yoda, A jackass you are! Don't assume to know how people live. Who are you to Judge? They don't all drink and party away their money. You are an insensitive, arrogant, self-righteous idiot.
You may or may not have to press 1 first. Not in the article. Just trying to help.
I got the number from the front page of the Reno Gazette Journal. Thursday 04/16/20. I'm looking at it right now. If it is misinformation, I am so sorry, but not my mistake.
when you guys file a claim online , you have to be on point when answering all the questions .. 1 mistake and they'll put a hold on your claim .. and make sure your quarterly salary figure is correct .. but just make sure you answer all the questions on point .. so please check your answers before you summit .. because once you summit the form , it's going to be hard to make the corrections .. God bless y'all
This is what happens when NEVADA turns BLUE. No one is accountable for their actions. SISOLAK put Jim Murrin, who fucked up the MGM properties and Las Vegas as his COVID 19 Tasks force and Sisolak’s Chief Medical Officer of Nevada Ihsan Azzam who advised Gov. Sisolak to make it illegal to prescribe hydroxychloroquine to COVID-19 victims. Then we found out Ihsan Azzam does not have a license to practice medicine in the United States and yet he is dictating public health policy in Nevada. These are his experts, as he always tells the NEVADAN'S. Sisolak here is a piece of advised for you and coming from a blue collar background. Please use your head and stop playing politics, tell your unemployment center to open their business 24 HRS and not hire outside source just to answer general questions. THAT IS A WASTE OF MONEY! Hire people so you can open the unemployment office for 24 HRS, 3 shifts, 8 hours a day until the unemployment goes back to normal. People are not working and they have to eat. Mr. Sisolak stop saying to me that you understand our frustrations. Because honestly you don't. You are still getting paid...even though you are doing a horrible job. Unlike most of us who got laid off..are still not getting through to unemployment website or phone since day 1 of unemployment. I hope this is a lesson to all NEVADAN's. BRING BACK THE STATE to RED.
Marty, Not sure where you got this number 803-603-9671, but it is someplace called the Columbia Medical Center. Fake information or wrong number? I would guess these folks are not happy with all the calls. Please refrain from giving out bad info, we get enough of that from our elected officials from Nevada. What did you all expect when this current failed crop was elected to represent us? Randy
@Yoda Not to get into a match sir, but for most of us it's our first time in decades or ever. We don't know that this is just how it works. We're frustrated, venting, and just looking for answers and support. Your chiming in gave neither. Now on a more constructive note, there is a new call center number to open claims.(803)603-9671.This should help open lines for those with more specific questions. HANG IN GUYS!
Stop living paycheck to paycheck Las Vegas, people live here to party and when the economy go's bad cry! I hope this gives every one of you crybaby victims the chance to self reflect and go open a savings account ! Stop eating out every day, maxing Credit cards, smoking your paycheck with mmj, drinking and partying and live within your means, depending on the government is so weak. I filled in November on the 2nd it took me until December 15th to resolve everything. Unemployment is this way all the time you will get paid. GROW UP BE ADULTS PLAN FOR A RAINY DAY DO SOMTHING STOP CRYING
For those who have confirmation numbers and open claims, you must still file a claim every week. When you log in it will give you the option to either file weekly claim or to go to homepage. Hopefully this will help someone.
I just received my weekly benefit. My funds plus $600. Not retroactively though. At this point just happy to get something. Running on empty. Hope you guys get your $$ soon!! Not the"Vacation" people think it is.
