As 2024 comes to a close, Zillow is recapping the year that was. And there were several surprising data points in the online real estate marketplace’s year-end report.
Zillow claims to help millions of Americans find their next home, dream home, forever home, second home, and retirement home. As for the latter, the online real estate listing provider says Pahrump, a town roughly 50 miles west of Las Vegas, emerged as a preferred retirement destination in 2024.
Pahrump is adjacent to the Nevada-California border. During the 2020 US Census, the unincorporated town on the southernmost tip of Nye County was home to about 45K people. That number presumably increased in 2024, as seniors flocked to the Mojave Desert destination.
In Zillow’s Most Popular Markets of 2024 report, the website reported that Pahrump was the “most popular retirement city.”
Fifty miles outside of Las Vegas, Pahrump is this year’s most popular retirement city. With a warm climate and more than one-third of its population ages 65 and older, Pahrump is an ideal community for retirees,” the Zillow report read.
“Pahrump bumped last year’s top retirement city — Pinehurst, North Carolina — to the second spot on this year’s list,” the report added.
The Binion Vault
Pahrump, once inhabited primarily by the Southern Paiute tribe, had no telephone service or paved roads until the 1960s. As nearby Las Vegas grew, so did the rural desert town. Pahrump opened its first high school in 1974, and further infrastructure and real estate development has been completed in the decades since.
Pahrump is best known to many for being where Ted Binion buried rare silver coins and Carson City silver dollars. Known as the Binion Hoard, Binion had a 12-foot deep vault dug in a property he owned in Pahrump where he stored the coins along with cash, silver bullion bars, and Horseshoe casino chips.
Ted, the son of Benny Binion, who opened Binion’s Horseshoe in downtown Las Vegas in the 1940s and founded the World Series of Poker, died suspiciously in 1998 at the age of 54. A longtime user of illicit drugs, law enforcement initially suspected an overdose after he was found dead in his Las Vegas home.
Two days later, Richard Tabish, a man suspected of being romantically involved with Binion’s girlfriend at the time, Sandy Murphy, was arrested after police found him digging up the underground vault. Tabish claimed Murphy had instructed him to retrieve the vault’s items.
In 2000, Tabish and Murphy were found guilty of murder and sentenced to 22 years to life in prison. The Nevada Supreme Court overturned their murder convictions just three years later on a procedural error. Each was acquitted of murder during their second trial.
Pahrump Attractions
Pahrump, being in Nevada, is home to casinos and taverns with slot machines — something many seniors cherish.
The city is also home to the Sanders Family Winery, Death Valley tours, the Pahrump Valley Museum, the Spring Mountain Motor Resort and Country Club, and an abundance of outdoor recreation.
Pahrump averages less than 30 rainy days a year. The summers are hot, though the evenings cool quickly due to the lack of urban heat. Winters are mild.
For those seeking a seedier retirement lifestyle, Pahrump is also home to two legal brothels — Sheri’s Ranch and Chicken Ranch. Nye County is one of 10 counties in Nevada where prostitution is legal.

The Sander Family Winery was great. And Johnny's Taco's is a must stop.
That aerial view looks more like a water color of one little housing area..not really what Pahrump looks like. You need an up close and personal tour ! No idea how it' s the #1 spot !
The last time I went to Pahrump, a lady was quick to let me know what type of people were not welcome in Pahrump. After a few coded sentences, I started to realize that the type of people she was referring to was me.
Couple of clarifications. Pahrump is an unincorporated town, not a city. The Sanders Family Winery is currently shut down due to liquor license violations. Spring Mountain Raceway is NOT open to the public. The abundant outdoor recreation areas and the water supply are being threatened by BIG solar farms and transmission lines. The town has 17 Mexican restaurants and little else. All of the casinos allow smoking. Meth is prevalent. Do your research!
That photo is the equivalent of a profile pic on a dating site -- taken from the best possible angle on the best possible day, edited and tweaked to within an inch of its life (and probably augmented by AI). Then you show up for the date... and see the real Pahrump.
What about Art Bell?
Great place if you want to put your double wide on a 1 acre lot After a 2 mile drive on a dirt road, and want to risk your life by living 50 miles from a good hospital or have thousands of dollars set aside for a helicopter ambulance into Vegas
Don't listen to the negative comments. Pahrump is a beautiful town with lots to offer. The people are extremely friendly and love their neighbors. Yes, Pahrump is affordable so you can buy a decent sized house and have a nice piece of land right outside of Las Vegas.. Pahrump has beautiful mountain views, it's very, very quiet out here, and the air quality is very good. We have hot air ballooning, death valley and the armagosa valley devil's hole pupfish. From Pahrump it's a short drive into Las Vegas. If you're a stargazer it's a wonderful place to see the universe. If you love your ATVs this town is unbeatable for recreation on all-terrain vehicles.
I loved Pahrump lived there 10 years till spouses passing. Beautiful mountain views, reasonably priced restaurants etc great neighbors! Sure there's drugs & crime but that's everywhere now
I lived there from 2006 to 2011. Coming into town from the California side, someone spray painted out 'Pahrump' on the Welcome to....sign and replaced it with the word 'Hell'. That about summed up the place.
Pahrump the dump
Pahrump a bump bump.
Haha yep meth, bikers and dust sums up Pahrump
Pahrump also ranks as the worst place to live in Nevada, it's where poor people go to retire. Great city if you're homeless, and love meth.
I live in Pahrump, and the photograph that you used for your article does not depict the town of Pahrump. I do not know what stock image you used, but it's for sure not Pahrump, Nevada.
Thanks, Glen. My apologies. I've swapped out the photo for an aerial view of Pahrump.
